Activities So Far & Newsletter Published on 19th August 2025

Over the past few months we have been non stop busy, this is a full overview of most of the things we’ve been up to. If we miss anything out we promise it’s not favouritism it’s just hard to keep track when we are up to all of these things!

April

There were 4 sessions of glass painting done with Yvonne and Anne of Abbeycrafts, split between 2 different groups, each group got to trial using the paints on sheets of perspex first to get a feel for the material and then moved on to various different glasses. There were so many laughs and the group got to take away such a fun variety of decorated glassware! ๐ŸŽจ๐Ÿท

The first afternoon event of April was a talk from Wick Lifeboats, we had such an amazing afternoon listening to the history of the station, the work they do now and even their TV appearance on Saving Lives at Sea.

The crew at the Wick Lifeboats station are incredibly dedicated and we loved hearing the local history that come with it and supporting the dangerous work they all do!

The second thing we got up to was befriending a large variety of animals and creatures from the group at Caithness Animal Farm out at Lybster. We not only had our own users holding animals from tortoises, rabbits and guinea pigs to the unusual snake, gecko, and spider, but some of the local kids came along to see all the animals and were far braver than all of us!

Some of them had 3 turns holding the snake ๐Ÿ˜ฒ๐Ÿ, it was such a wonderful afternoon, it was great to see the community coming together enjoying each others company!

May

Our first visitor was Faith Charlton Music, a young singer songwriter from Thurso, she absolutely mesmerised the audience with her incredible and soft voice. ๐ŸŽค๐ŸŽธ

She played us a variety of songs whether it was something you might hear from Skipinnish or something you may have been a rockin’ and a rollin’ to like, Elvis Presley, the selection was incredible and we would welcome her back any time she’s available.

๐Ÿ‘€๐ŸŽถIf you keep you take a peek on our Facebook there is a 40 second snippet of Faith’s amazing rendition of Ring of Fire!

To keep in line with our VE Day celebrations, we invited along Valerie from the Nucleus Archive and she gave us a wonderful presentation of a local war story, surrounding the former owners of the Portland Arms Hotel at Lybster. ๐ŸŒน

We were glued to our seats listening to the story unfold, looking at slides of letters written during the war and photographs of the local area from times gone by. ๐Ÿ“–๐Ÿ“š Hearing tales of local history is always so incredible and the archive have so many hidden gems to reveal we love inviting them along!

June

To kick off June the right way we invited along Ady Harper to give us a tune, these afternoons are always full of laughs and memories plus the odd musical trivia question to keep us on our toes!๐ŸŽค We love having Ady and friends along to serenade us, getting to hear all the classics and especially requesting our favourites.

Hopefully he doesn’t get sick of visiting us, as we will welcome him back any time. ๐Ÿคฉ๐ŸŽถ

For our second look back into June we look at the Strollers Group and their long walk along part of the John O’ Groats trail, between Golspie and Brora, which was an approximately 6 mile walk. The weather was on our side for the afternoon, despite the clouds hovering over it stayed dry and made the walk that bit better. โ›…๏ธ

The walk takes you along the coast and beneath ๐ŸฐDunrobin Castle๐Ÿฐ and I’m sure you can imagine this was a small handful of the photos taken on the day.

Both the dogs and the people from the walk had a good long sleep that night! ๐Ÿถ

We ended the month with our amazing trip to the Wick Heritage Museum, we got such a warm welcome on such a gorgeous day!

We were toured around the museum in 3 groups so we could all make the most of our time.

Shown their wonderful Johnston collection of photos, Caithness glass pieces, history of the herring fishing, other local trades like coopering. They have a full smithy, the old lightbulb and mechanism from a lighthouse, boats and rooms set up like houses from times gone by.

We absolutely adored our trip and that’s just a handful of the things on display in the ever expansive museum! The team were wonderful and welcoming, plus we were lucky enough to have our cuppas and sandwiches outside in sun.

I don’t think one post can explain how jam packed with local history the museum is, we highly recommend a visit! It was a great day.
